Personality and Interest Assessments

When you search for a career, you may want to review your personality, interests, skills, and values. There are many assessment surveys that can help you identify these traits. If you have access to a career counselor's office at your school or institution, it is an excellent resource for such surveys. There are also many good assessments that are available online, either for free or a minimal cost. The Teacher Center provides information and links to some of these.

In using the assessments, keep in mind that converging evidence from several different measures is considered to be more valid than a single test used alone. Also, results from these types of assessments should be interpreted with caution, more as general recommendations than an absolute vocational "must." Job context variables (such as management and other conditions such as level of autonomy) play an important role in job satisfaction beyond interests and personality.
