Academic ADL Co-Laboratory

The Southern Regional Education Board, through its three technology-related initiatives was the first multi-state academic partner of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative. ADL was created to enable global access to and reuse of learning tools and content through the development of industry-supported guidelines and specifications. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors. The Academic ADL Co-Laboratory tests, evaluates, and demonstrates the distance learning tools and technologies developed for ADL by the federal government, academia, and industry.

Anne Arundel Community College

Established in 1961, Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) in Arnold, MD, is a recognized leader in its use of technology to serve about 54,000 credit and noncredit students annually.

AACC's innovative programs led to its unanimous selection this year by the League for Innovation in the Community College as the 20th college represented on the league’s board of directors. The league has more than 750 members worldwide.

The Center for Digital Education, the nation’s leading resource on information technology policy, trends and opportunities in K-12 and higher education, recognized AACC in 2004 with a first-place award in national competition for its use of digital technology to help students, faculty and the general public access information and perform tasks easily online. Co-sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, the awards go to the top 10 institutions in three categories. AACC won in the mid-sized, suburban category.

The New Media Consortium recently recognized AACC among 50 colleges and universities worldwide as leaders in innovative approaches to the use of technology.

Sloan-C Member

In November 2003, SREB joined the Sloan Consortium, an association of nearly 500 institutions and organizations of higher education engaged in online learning. The two groups are teaming up to improve online educational programs offered by their members.

The purpose of the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) is to help learning organizations continually improve quality, scale, and breadth according to their own distinctive missions, so that education will become a part of everyday life, accessible and affordable for anyone, anywhere, at any time, in a wide variety of disciplines. Created with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Sloan-C encourages the collaborative sharing of knowledge and effective practices to improve online education in learning effectiveness, access, affordability for learners and providers, and student and faculty satisfaction. Sloan-C generates ideas to improve products, services and standards for the online learning industry, and assists members in collaborative initiatives. Members include (1) private and public universities and colleges, community colleges and other accredited course and degree providers, and (2) organizations and suppliers of services, equipments, and tools that practice the Sloan-C quality principles.

Sloan-C and SREB have an established history of collaboration, including eArmyU, a project funded by the U.S. Army to deliver online education to American soldiers around the world and Sloan Semester, a special 8-week accelerated semester designed to serve the learning needs of students affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Frederick Community College

Frederick Community College in Maryland serves more than 16,000 students each year. Like many community colleges across the country, it has students of all ages and backgrounds. Whether they're just out of high school or changing careers midstream, students often need career guidance before they register for classes.

Frederick Community College now provides various student services through the Web. It recently launched an online Career Center website to better serve students with busy lives and schedules. Through the online Career Center students can access a number of services, from career assessment and planning to job search tips and links. FCC students can also post their resumes and apply for jobs using the online job board. Due to the success of the Career Center website, other areas of the college are now offering more electronic services.
